Employee engagement will begin at 0800.
Organizations frequently wait for engagement to emerge naturally. This creates inconsistency. Some employees become enthusiastic. Others become thoughtful. A few ask what the initiative is intended to accomplish.
A scheduled approach is more reliable.
Engagement as an Operational Requirement
Engagement should be defined as the measurable display of approved employee emotion.
Useful indicators include attendance, applause, participation in photographed activities, completion of culture surveys, use of campaign language, and visible willingness to describe the initiative as exciting.
Private belief is difficult to audit. Public behavior is more practical.
The Launch Event
Every engagement program should begin with an event containing:
- A branded theme
- A leadership video
- Matching shirts
- At least one statement about a journey
- A voluntary activity whose attendance is recorded
The event should occur before employees have enough information to form independent expectations.
Engagement Champions
Select employees who are naturally positive, organizationally ambitious, or seated near leadership. Give them visible titles and responsibility for encouraging enthusiasm in others.
This allows morale concerns to be redirected to peers before they reach management.
Measuring Success
Engagement should be measured immediately after the launch event, while food, novelty, and executive presence remain active.
If results are weak, the organization should improve communication. This is generally faster than improving the conditions being communicated.
Engagement does not need to be spontaneous. It needs to be on time.
